Predicting the future?

Proverbs 16:9 tells us: "A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps". It's true that some of life's journeys take more planning than others. Generally speaking, before I head somewhere, I try and learn as much as I can about where I am going so I don't miss anything along the way and I also know the way. I study maps, plan out scenarios, review supply lists, gear lists, figure budgets for fuel, food, lodging, make sure pretravel maintenance is in check, and a host of other things. I do this before going so I don't have to think about it while I'm gone. That is just what "devise" means in Proverbs 16:9: "To think, plan, esteem, calculate, invent, make a judgement, imagine, and count." However, there is another factor in the equation... the LORD. "Direct" comes from the Hebrew word (kun), pronounced "koon". It means: "to be firm, be stable, be established, fixed, secure, arranged, and settled. While I may plan things in life, the LORD has a fixed direction for each step. The trick is to let the LORD have His way in your life. Our plans may run foul, and calculations may be incorrect, but God's directed steps are established, and fully furnished. He knows you better than you know yourself, and He also knows the way because "He is the way" (John 14:6). He is good, and his goodness endures forever. God may direct you and I into places that weren't on our "itinerary", and that's ok because He is good and His way is better than anything we could have ever "devised". Trust Him.
